In the early 1990s, it was suggested to Buck that he record his recollections of his service, and so he sat down and handwrote 40 foolscap pages. He started at the beginning, finished at the end, and took a lot of detours as the story unfolded. The first transcription of this handwritten memoir was done by one of Buck's grandsons, and a copy of that transcription is held in the National Library of New Zealand, under the title "Night Flyers".

This is an all-new transcription of Buck's handwritten memoir, undertaken specifically for the creation of this website to ensure a faithful, warts-and-all reproduction of Buck's account. The spelling, punctuation and syntax is true to the handwritten version, and the format corresponds page-for-page with the original, for ease of comparison.
